8 Reasons why you should see Mulu at least once in your lifetime

Entrance to Clearwater Cave, Mulu National Park

Last December, we had a short escape into the mountains for 5 days. Little did we know what we have actually signed up for. The mountains have so much more to offer than what we have expected from it.

1. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

By saying that, it is obvious that Mulu is well protected from exploitation and destruction. Mulu only offers the most natural way of lifestyle and it is the best place for you to reconnect with Mother Nature.

2. Real escape from city life

And why did I say so? “Thankfully” to the telco services which provide absolutely no connection with the outside world (except at certain spots like the top of the pinnacles), we had the most peaceful 5 days in our life. We had absolutely no distraction thus it is a great chance to pay more attention to each other and things around us, and guess what? I have never seen so many stars and fireflies in my life!

3. Great caving adventures

From casual cave visiting to hardcore cave explorations, Mulu can satisfy cave enthusiasts of all levels. We visited the four mainstream caves which are Deer, Lang, Wind and Clearwater Caves as our Clearwater Revival Adventure had to be cancelled due to bad weather. We heard that it will be drier in the months of June to September. Be sure to check out the amazing caves which cover a distance of as long as 300km underground!

4. Rich flora and fauna

If you are into bioecology, you have to visit Mulu National Park. You can choose from a wide range of activities to discover the ecosystem in Mulu: bat watching in Deer Cave, jungle trekking in various trails, Canopy Skywalk, Night tours etc.

5. Hail, hikers!

Hikers, make sure you take down Mulu Pinnacles because as hiking enthusiasts, this was one of the best hike we have ever done! 18km trailing in the jungle and 2.4km steep incline in 3 days 2 nights has brought us to the picturesque scene of the Mulu Pinnacles, it is definitely worth all the sweat and cramps. After the intense hike, make sure to chill at the river beside Camp 5, we had the best time in our life chilling in the river! Note: make sure you bring enough food supply if you have decided to sign up with Mulu Park HQ (stay tuned for more info about things you should know before going to Mulu).

6. Food!

Due to geographical difficulty, food has to be transported into Mulu via MasWings (in the aircraft along with the travellers). Eggs and meat can be pricey and on high demand all around Mulu. However, we enjoyed most of the local dishes especially “Paku”, I made sure I have this dish served to me in all of our meals back there in Mulu.

7. Friendly locals

Our encounter with the locals was one of the unforgettable moments. Peter and his friends in Mulu were amazing mountain guides, knowledgeable not only in tourism but also in all other aspects. The mountain was filled with our laughter and before we know it, we have reached the peak. Our hosts in Mulu, Robert and Dina from D’Cave Homestay, treated us like children of their own-from making sure that we have enough food each day before our adventures, to lending us their waterproof bags, and Mulu airport transfer, all had been taken care of.

8. Challenging your limit

We considered ourselves hikers of intermediate level but nothing had so far challenged us like Mulu did. There were a few moments during the hike that I’ve considered turning back because the Pinnacles hike is not for any faint hearts; it truly challenged my determination, strength and stamina. But thanks to Kok How, he has given me enough motivation to complete this challenge. It is not impossible, you just need to be determined, be careful and take one step at a time. Even by taking the smallest step means you are moving forward!
We hope you like our post on 8 reasons you should see Mulu at least once in your life! Hope that it has inspired you to travel into Mulu for an adventure which will stay vivid in your memory for a lifetime. Stay tuned for more updates!
